How to create a DJ set Part IV

You know that one of the most important parts of the ambiance in a nightclub is music. Is what keeps you dancing, tapping the table with your fingers, dancing at the same rhythm while you look at the eyes of your girlfriend or boyfriend. Here in Dady’O we know that and that is why we constantly feature some of the best dance club music DJ’s in Cancun. Obviously, to get to that place, these DJ’s have honed their mixing skills to the top, and we would love you to do the same. Read the crowd
So you have the perfect set made at your place, it’s a nice summer break night, you arrive to the club and you are ready to push play, and rock the house as you zip a cocktail, right? Now what happens if no one really fancies your mix?

DJ Cruze shares an anecdote with us: “Do you remember the time when you decided to play the deep, dark and bassline-heavy Armand Van Helden remix of “Spin Spin Sugar” by The Sneaker Pimps when the crowd hadn’t enjoyed your previous speed garage tune? No? Oh, that must have been me then! We all get it wrong from time to time when we are DJ’ing and it’s almost always for the same reason: not reading the crowd. In my story, I didn’t pay attention to the fact that the crowd weren’t feeling speed garage. “Spin Spin Sugar” was a huge tune for me at the time, but not in Germany so the dance floor cleared.”

Its very important to adjust to the crowd as you adjust to another person as you have a conversation. You don’t keep talking about the same stuff when you notice they are feeling uncomfortable about the topic you are talking about. If you feel people are just trying to find the rhythm, that some of the couples start heading to their tables, or that simply the mood is not the best, it is time to change the mood of your DJ set. Use hot songs to get the crazy party girls back to the dancefloor, and use some classics to build more mass, however as we said, don’t rely of them.

Dady’O is perhaps the busiest nightclub in Cancun at summer break, and our DJ’s have to worry about keeping all kinds of patrons happy and engaged (helped by the sexy gogo girls, the awesome acrobatics and the amazing laser shows, of course), but we know that you, at your own level, have a heavy responsibility to provide an awesome night to the people visiting the nightclub you are playing in. Also, you must know that most of the all inclusive nightclubs (the ones that by paying your cover give you all you can drink bar) love to have people away from the bar and in the dance floor, a talented DJ can save awful lots of money to an all inclusive nightclub, and still deliver an unforgettable experience to all the partiers.

Learn from your experience
After you’ve performed, instead of celebrating you’ve got to really look pro and try to summarize what you did well and where you messed it up before your party girl fans or a bikini contest distract you and make you forget all lessons learned. Remember which tracks worked, if you scored some amazing combo that made people cheer at you, and which was the best mood for each kind of clubber. Take notes of it as DJ Cruze suggests:  “too pumping for warm up” or “not hard enough to play at 2am”.  You will start creating yourself a taste for the kinds of tracks that work better for different kinds of gigs, and who knows, if you really rock you could even share some tracks with us and be invited to play at Dady’O, the best nightclub in Cancun!
